“Can AI write my divorce agreement?”
“Can ChatGPT tell me what I’m entitled to?”
“Will AI replace lawyers?”
They’re fair questions. Technology is changing almost every profession, and the legal field is no exception.
The short answer is this:
AI has changed how we work, but it hasn’t changed California family law—or the need for experienced legal judgment.
California Family Law Is Still About People
California’s Family Code hasn’t suddenly become simpler because AI exists.
Whether you’re navigating a divorce, determining child custody, negotiating support, or dividing complex assets, the law still requires careful analysis of your unique circumstances.
No two families are exactly alike.
A computer can summarize statutes or explain legal concepts, but it doesn’t know your family, your priorities, your financial situation, or what matters most to your children.
That’s where an experienced family law attorney makes all the difference.
Where AI Can Be Helpful
I believe technology has its place.
AI can help people:
- Understand basic legal terminology.
- Learn the general steps in a divorce.
- Organize financial information.
- Prepare questions before meeting with an attorney.
- Draft an initial list of issues to discuss.
These are useful starting points.
Informed clients often make better decisions because they understand the process before we begin working together.
Where AI Falls Short
The challenge is that AI often sounds confident—even when it’s incomplete or simply wrong.
I’ve seen online advice that doesn’t account for California law, local court procedures, or recent legal developments. More importantly, AI can’t recognize the nuances that often determine the outcome of a family law case.
For example:
Should you settle or litigate?
Is a proposed parenting plan realistic for your children?
What hidden tax consequences should you consider before agreeing to divide assets?
How will today’s agreement affect you five or ten years from now?
These aren’t questions that can be answered with a generic response.
They’re questions that require legal experience, strategic thinking, and a genuine understanding of your goals.
Family Law Requires More Than Legal Knowledge
One of the things I’ve learned after years of practicing family law is that clients rarely come to my office with only legal concerns.
They’re worried about their children.
They’re concerned about financial security.
They’re anxious about their future.
Sometimes they simply need someone who will listen before offering advice.
No technology can replace empathy, sound judgment, or the ability to help people navigate one of the most difficult transitions of their lives.
AI Doesn’t Stand Beside You in Court
If negotiations become difficult or your case proceeds to trial, AI won’t advocate for you.
It won’t question witnesses.
It won’t negotiate with opposing counsel.
It won’t recognize when a settlement is fair—or when it’s time to stand firm.
Those responsibilities require experience, preparation, and professional judgment.
The Best Approach Is Using Technology Wisely
I believe AI will continue to become a valuable tool in the legal profession, just as research databases, electronic filing, and virtual hearings have improved efficiency over the years.
But a tool is only as valuable as the professional using it.
Technology should help lawyers serve clients more effectively—not replace the thoughtful legal counsel clients deserve.
My Advice
If you’re using AI to educate yourself and prepare questions, that’s a great first step.
Just don’t make life-changing legal decisions based solely on what a chatbot tells you.
Your family, your finances, and your future deserve advice that’s tailored to your unique situation—not a one-size-fits-all answer.
